📖How to Use Typing Master

Typing Master is a complete typing tutor that helps you learn touch typing from scratch. It combines structured lessons, timed tests, and interactive games to build speed and accuracy. Here is a step-by-step guide to get the most out of it:

  1. Start with the Finger Guide: Navigate to the Finger Guide tab to learn the correct home row position (ASDF JKL;). Understand which finger presses which key. This foundation is crucial—wrong habits are hard to break later.
  2. Complete Lessons in Order: Go to the Lessons tab. Start from Lesson 1 (Home Row Basics) and progress sequentially. Each lesson focuses on a specific set of keys. Type the displayed text; the virtual keyboard highlights the next key and the finger to use. Your progress is saved automatically.
  3. Take Timed Tests: Once you're comfortable with the keyboard, go to the Tests tab. Choose a duration (30 seconds to 10 minutes) and difficulty (Easy, Medium, Hard, Quotes, Code). Your WPM (Words Per Minute) and accuracy are measured live. Try to beat your previous scores.
  4. Play Typing Games: The Games tab offers four fun challenges:
    • Word Storm: Type falling words before they hit the ground.
    • Typing Race: Race against a bot by typing words correctly.
    • Word Blast: Type the displayed word before the timer runs out.
    • Word Scramble: Unscramble jumbled letters to form the correct word.
  5. Practice Daily: Consistency is key. 15–20 minutes of daily practice yields better results than occasional long sessions. Focus on accuracy first—speed will naturally follow.
  6. Track Your Stats: After each test or lesson, review your WPM, accuracy, and characters typed. Aim for 95%+ accuracy before pushing for higher speed.
  7. Use the Virtual Keyboard: The on-screen keyboard shows the next key to press and the correct finger. It also highlights the home row key for the required finger, helping you build muscle memory.
  8. Adjust Difficulty: As you improve, switch to harder text samples (Quotes, Code) to challenge yourself and expand your typing vocabulary.

💬Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is Typing Master and how does it work?
Typing Master is a free online typing tutor that helps you learn touch typing. It provides structured lessons that teach finger placement, timed tests that measure your WPM and accuracy, and interactive games that build speed and reflex. All you need is a keyboard and a browser—no downloads or signups required.
2. Is Typing Master really free?
Yes, Typing Master is 100% free to use. There are no hidden charges, no premium plans, and no ads. You can access all lessons, tests, games, and the finger guide without creating an account.
3. How is WPM calculated?
WPM stands for Words Per Minute. It is calculated using the standard formula: (correct characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes elapsed. One "word" is standardized as 5 characters, including spaces. For example, if you type 250 correct characters in 1 minute, your WPM is 250 ÷ 5 = 50 WPM.
4. What is a good typing speed?
Typing speeds vary by experience:
  • 0–25 WPM: Beginner. Focus on accuracy and correct finger placement.
  • 25–45 WPM: Average. Most casual computer users fall here.
  • 45–65 WPM: Fluent. Comfortable for professional work.
  • 65–85 WPM: Fast. Above most office workers.
  • 85+ WPM: Expert. Professional typist level.
Remember: accuracy is more important than raw speed. A 60 WPM with 99% accuracy is far better than 80 WPM with 85% accuracy.
5. Do I need to create an account to save progress?
No account is needed. Your lesson completion progress is saved locally in your browser using localStorage. This means your progress stays on your device, and you don't have to share any personal information. However, clearing your browser data will reset your progress.
6. Can I use Typing Master on a mobile phone or tablet?
The tool is responsive and works on mobile browsers, but typing on a touchscreen is different from a physical keyboard. For the best learning experience, use a desktop or laptop with a physical keyboard. Mobile is fine for quick practice or games.
7. How do the lessons work?
Each lesson presents a set of text to type. The virtual keyboard highlights the next key to press and shows the correct finger to use. As you type, correct characters turn green and incorrect ones turn red. The lesson completes when you finish the text. Lessons are ordered by difficulty—start from Lesson 1 and move up.
8. What are the typing games and what do they teach?
The games are designed to build specific skills:
  • Word Storm: Improves speed and reflex under time pressure.
  • Typing Race: Builds competitive speed and accuracy.
  • Word Blast: Enhances precision and quick recall.
  • Word Scramble: Trains vocabulary and letter recognition.
Playing games regularly makes practice enjoyable and helps you type faster without conscious effort.
9. How can I improve my typing accuracy?
Accuracy comes from correct finger placement and deliberate practice. Follow these tips:
  • Always return your fingers to the home row (ASDF JKL;).
  • Use the correct finger for each key, even if it feels slow at first.
  • Don't look at the keyboard—trust your muscle memory.
  • Slow down until you can type without mistakes, then gradually increase speed.
  • Practice daily for 15–20 minutes.
10. Is my data or typing history sent to a server?
No. All typing measurements and progress tracking happen entirely in your browser. Your lesson completion is stored in localStorage on your device. No keystrokes, test results, or personal data are sent to any server. We do not track or store your information.
11. What is the Finger Guide and why is it important?
The Finger Guide is a reference section that explains which finger should press which key. It includes a color-coded keyboard and a detailed map of finger assignments. Following it is crucial because touch typing depends on consistent finger-to-key mapping. If you use the wrong finger, you'll develop habits that limit your speed and accuracy.
12. Can I reset my progress?
Yes. Since progress is stored in your browser's localStorage, you can clear it by clearing your browser's site data for this page. Alternatively, you can manually delete the typingCompleted key from your browser's developer tools. This will reset all lesson completion marks.

Finger Placement & Posture Guide

Touch typing means typing without looking at the keyboard. This is only possible if every finger always returns to its home position.

The Home Row — Your Base Position

Place both hands on the middle row. Rest your left index finger on F and your right index finger on J. You'll feel a small raised bump on both keys — that's your anchor. Every other finger finds its key from here.

Correct Posture Checklist

  • Sit up straight — back supported by the chair
  • Feet flat on the floor, knees at 90°
  • Elbows bent at roughly 90°, close to your sides
  • Wrists straight — not bent up or down
  • Screen at eye level, arm's length away
  • Fingers curved over home row keys
  • Do not rest wrists on the desk while typing
  • Look at the screen, not the keyboard

How to Build Speed

  • Accuracy first, speed second. 100% accurate typing naturally speeds up.
  • Practice 15–20 minutes daily. Short sessions beat marathons.
  • Never look down. If you forget a key, glance once and remember.
  • Don't stop to fix every typo mid-word — finish, then correct.
  • Use the correct finger even if it feels slow. Wrong habits are hard to unlearn.
  • Track your WPM weekly. Improvements come in steps.
